The Incredible_Dr_Guttman_posterNovember 2 - A play based on the life of Ludwig Guttmann, the founder of the Paralympic Movement, has been performed for the first time and is now touring Britain.

Set against the backdrop of the London 1948 Olympics, "The Incredible Doctor Guttmann", tells the story of how one doctor revolutionised medical and social history by creating an event for disabled ex-servicemen and women.

The play, written by Nicholas McInerny, focuses on the relationship between Guttmann and two young paraplegic patients.

As a brilliant young Jewish doctor, Guttman and his family were forced to flee Nazi-Germany, taking refuge in England.

Here his work gave new hope to people whose lives had been torn apart by spinal-injury.

Henry arrives at Stoke Mandeville Hospital from the battlefields of northern Europe, injured in World War Two, broken and with only six weeks to live.

Florence has had a riding accident and lost all hope.

Their meeting with Dr Guttmann and his team will change their lives, and the lives of others like them.

The play is presented by Karen Simpson Productions.

"Doctor Guttmann's incredible battle against prejudice, ignorance and indifference changed both lives and attitudes and his legacy continues to offer dignity, hope and accomplishment to millions of people around the world today," said Simpson.
