Benita Fitzgerald MosleyJune 19 - Benita Fitzgerald Mosley, the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles, has been named by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as its chief of organisational excellence.

The Los Angeles 1984 champion (pictured top) joins the national Olympic committee from US Track and Field, where she was chief of sport performance for the past four years, including during London 2012 when the nation secured 29 medals.

She will assume many of the responsibilities of outgoing chief administrative officer Kirsten Volpi - who is returning to the Colorado School of Mines where she previously served as chief financial officer - including diversity and inclusion, human resources, facilities, national governing body organisational development, security and strategic planning, and will report to USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun.

Fitzgerald Mosley will also oversee a number of organisational projects, including athlete career programmes and the athlete ombudsman's office.

"The opportunity to return to the USOC and continue to serve the Olympic Movement in a broader role is a dream come true," she said.

"The USOC has dedicated itself to competitive excellence and I look forward to helping the organisation take that mission to the next level."

Fitzgerald Mosley was also President and chief executive of Women in Cable Telecommunications from 2001 to 2009 and previously serving in a variety of roles for the USOC, including director of the Chula Vista Olympic Training Centre from 1995 to 1997, director of US Olympic Training Centres from 1997 to 2000 and director of public relations programmes from 2000 to 2001.

"I'm extraordinarily excited about this addition to our team," Blackmun said.

"We have to ensure that we continue to evolve as an organisation and hold ourselves to the same standards as our athletes, and Benita will help us do just that."

Blackmun also paid tribute to Volpi, saying: "Kirsten has been a fantastic member of our leadership team and has made our operations more effective than ever.

"I'm grateful for her dedication, professionalism and friendship, and I know that she will remain a strong supporter of Team USA."

USOC also announced that chief financial officer Walt Glover will assume additional responsibility for information technology and audit, while Rick Adams has been named chief of sport operations and national governing body relations.

Meanwhile, chief of sport operations Mike English will leave at the end of the month after successfully managing significant changes to the Olympic training centre business models and overseeing major construction projects at the three US facilities.
