July 7 - Judo day 1Hungary's Abigel Joo today claimed the first medal judo of the Universiade at Kazan 2013.


The Olympic bronze medallist defeated France's Madeleine Malonga in the final of the women's -78kg competition.

The Hungarian, 22, had Malonga on the floor twice, during a relatively easy victory, with South Korea's Park Jongwon and Japan's Mami Umeki claiming the first bronze medals.

The women's +78kg competition produced the first shock of the day at the 10,000 capacity Tatneft Arena, as a yuko in the dying seconds of the contest saw Brazil's Rochele Nunes snatch victory from overwhelming favourite and London 2012 gold medallist Idalys Ortiz Bocourt from Cuba, in the final.

Mariia Shekerova provided the home support with something to cheer about as she secured one of the bronze medals, with Belarussian Maryna Slutskaya taking the other one

Another yuko, following a tactical sumi-gaeshi handed victory to the Czech Republic's Lukas Krpalek in the final of the men's -100kg category.

The reigning European champion and Paris Grand Slam winner defeated last month's winner of the Miami Grand Prix event and 2011 World Championship bronze medallist, Zafar Makhmadov from Russia, much to the disappointment of most inside the arena.

South Korea's Shim Ji Ho lost out by penalty to Soyib Kurbonov from Uzbekistan for the bronze medal, while Brazilian Rafael Buzacarini claimed the other one.

It was the men's +100kg category's turn to deliver the second upset of the day as Cho Guham from South Korea overcame triple European silver medallist Barna Bor from Hungary, to claim the gold medal.

The 26-year-old World Championship silver medallist could not match the tactical nous of Cho who added to his bronze at the 2013 Paris Grand Slam.

Poland's Maciej Sarnacki one of the bronze medals while Renat Saidov sent the home supporters away happy in the second bronze medal match by defeating Iurii Krakovetskii from Uzbekistan to hand Russia its third medal of the day.
