Olympic bronze medallist Tereshchuk and Tymoshchenko secured the top spot by just 10 points over the Russian pair's score in what was a close contest the whole way through, but superb showings in the riding and combined events, which saw the Ukrainians finish first in both events, was enough to secure gold ahead of their big rivals.

Laura Asadauskaitė and Justinas Kinderis from Lithuania finished in third position.

That was the Ukraine's fourth medal of the championships, which took place over six days in the Polish town of Drzonków, from July 11 to 17.

Tereshchuk, fresh from her victory in the World Cup Final, and teammates Ganna Buriak and Iryna Khokhlova finished in the silver medal position in the women's team event behind the Great British trio of Kate French, Samantha Murray and Mhairi Spence.


Buriak and fellow Ukrainian Anastasiya Spas finished second and third respectively, in the women's individual final behind Hungary's Zsofia Foldhazi.

Foldhazi is having a tremendous year in what is only her third season competing in the senior ranks, adding the European title to the Budapest Open Championships win and Budapest Open Cup she claimed earlier in the season.

Britain topped the standings in the women's team relay as French and Murray – winning a second gold medal each – along with Katy Burke won gold ahead of Poland's Katarzyna Wójcik, Oktawia Nowacka and Aleksandra Skarzynska, with Germany's Claudia Knack, Annika Schleu and Lena Schöneborn finishing third.

Foldhazi's compatriots Ádám Marosi and Róbert Kasza made it a Hungarian one-two in the men's individual event, finishing ahead of Lesun.

Marosi, who won bronze at London 2012 and was individual world champion in 2009, led the individual standings right from the start, following his victory in the fencing event.


He also led Hungary to victory in the men's team event along with Kasza and Bence Demeter.

The trio finished almost 200 points ahead of Jean Maxence Berrou, Christopher Patte and Valentin Prades of France, with Italy's Nicola Benedetti, Riccardo De Luca and Pierpaolo Petroni finishing with bronze.

In the men's team relay, France emerged victorious as Geoffrey Megi, Valentin Belaud and Prades – who recently won the World Cup Final in Nizhny Novgorod – claimed gold ahead of Polish trio Jan Kuf, Ondřej Polívka and Michal Sedlecky.

Joseph Evans, Samuel Curry and James Cooke came third, securing a third medal of the championships for Britain.
