Nuno Merino is trampolinings sole FIG Athletes Commission candidateNovember 4 - Nuno Merino, Portugal's first ever trampolinist to compete at an Olympics when he appeared at Athens 2004, has today been named as the discipline's sole candidate for election to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Athletes' Commission.

The 33-year-old, who placed sixth at the Games in the Greek capital, was the only athlete to register his candidature by the deadline but he will still face a vote on Wednesday (November 6), which is being held at the Trampoline World Championships in Sofia.

If elected he will replace incumbent Dmitri Poliaroush of Belarus, who is now a member of the FIG Trampoline Technical Committee, and gain voting rights in Technical Committee activities.

Merino will also join the five other members of the Commission - President Jani Tanskanen of Finland, Briton Beth Tweddle for artistic gymnastics, Belarus' Liubov Charkashyna for rhythmic gymnastics, Aldrin Rodríguez of Mexico for aerobics and Azerbaijan's Ayla Ahmadova for acrobatics - in representing the athletes in their respective disciplines.

The World Championships are due to run until next Sunday (November 10).
