The IOC has awarded CANOC Broadcasting Inc the Rio 2016 broadcast rights in the CaribbeanNovember 11 - CANOC Broadcasting Inc (CBI) has been awarded the Caribbean broadcast rights for the Rio 2016 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today.

The deal means the firm, formed by the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and Commonwealth Games Associations across the region to buy and sell broadcast rights for major sporting events, acquires the rights for all media platforms and languages in the territories.

These are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Turks and Caicos.

Richard Carrión, chairman of the IOC's Finance Commission - who is stepping down from front-line duties after losing in the President's race to Thomas Bach, led the negotiations for the agreement, which includes "expansive free television coverage of the Games".

CBI chief executive Larry Romany said the deal "heralds a new era for sport in the Caribbean".

"The economic benefits present considerable funding opportunities for developing youth in the region and increases the viability and international competitiveness of the Caribbean athlete," he explained.

"We are very excited at the prospect of a more integrated approach to the development of sports."

IOC President Bach added: "Throughout the history of the Olympic Games, athletes from across the Caribbean have produced outstanding, inspirational performances.

"We are pleased to have reached this agreement to enable extensive broadcast coverage of the Rio 2016 Games in the region."
