The former army officer had managed the nation's athletes at 12 Summer and Winter Olympics during his 20-year spell at the BOA and played a key role in London's successful bid to host the 2012 Games.

Clegg, now chairman of Great Britain Badminton, was named alongside Great Britain Hockey President Richard Leman and Royal Yachting Association chief executive Sarah Treseder as the three new Board Directors at the meeting in London.

Following his departure from the BOA in 2008 Clegg worked as chief executive for Ipswich Town Football Club and is now a consultant.

The 54-year-old from Middlesex worked on Madrid's unsuccessful campaign for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics and is now involved in the preparations for the inaugural European Games in Baku in 2015.

Meanwhile, Mexico City 1968 Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion David Hemery, also a former UK Athletics President, was re-elected for a two-year term as BOA vice-chairman.

"I would like to congratulate David, Simon, Richard and Sarah on their successful election to the Board of the British Olympic Association," BOA chairman Sebastian Coe said.

"Along with the entire Board, I very much look forward to their contributions."

The NOC meeting also saw tributes paid to a number of individuals for their "contributions and service to British Olympic sport", including Dame Di Ellis - who was chair of British Rowing for 24 years - and British Canoe Union President Albert Woods, who were both named life vice-presidents of the BOA.

Adidas head of sports marketing Robin Money, who has been with the sports company since 1976 and was instrumental in the forming of the relationship between his firm and the British team in 1984, was also awarded Special Recognition.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Di and Albert for their outstanding service to the Board and welcome them as Life Members," said Coe.

"The importance of volunteer service should never be underestimated and we are extremely fortunate to have so many dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers, past and present, who have helped shape and direct the British Olympic Association.

"And to Robin and our many friends at Adidas, we pay tribute and offer our thanks for everything they do to support Team GB and give our athletes the best opportunity for success in the Olympic arena."
