December 19 - The South Korean mens speed skating team stand atop the podium after taking their country's fourth speed skating gold today ©Roberto Bombarda/Trentino 2013 UniversiadeSouth Korea's men and women brought the speed skating competitions at the 26th Winter Universiade to a close by claiming both team pursuit events here. 

It ensured they finished as the dominant nation on the large rink with 15 medals, consisting of four gold five silver and six bronze.

In the women's team pursuit the trio of Kim Bo Reum, Park Doyoung and Yang Shin Young crossed the line almost five seconds clear of nearest rivals Japan, clocking an impressive time of 3min 06.53sec to take the title.

The Italians Francesca Lollobrigida, Francesca Bettrone and Giulia Lollobrigida took the bronze medal ahead of Norway.

In the men's event Joo Hyong Jun, Kim Cheol Min and Ko Byung Wook were imperious across the ice as they registered a time of 3:48.81 to see off the challenge of Russia by almost nine seconds.

Meanwhile, inside the Ice Rink Stadium, the finalists for tomorrow's men's and women's curling finals were decided with Great Britain overcoming Canada 7-4 with an assured display, while Sweden also looked in good shape as they came out on top of their Scandinavian derby with Norway on a scoreline of 6-3.

The Canadians went on to take bronze against Norway while bronze in the women's competition bronze was claimed by Switzerland who defeated Britain.

Earlier, a very strong Russian outfit proved too strong for the British team in their semi-final to set up a clash with the other semi-final victors South Korea.

There was more South Korean success, this time on the short track speed skating rink at Palaghiaccio in Trento as Lee Hyo Been outskated the rest of the field to take gold in the men's 500 metre race.

Patrick Duffy of Canada took the silver medal while third place was occupied by Shi Jingnan of China.

Jingnan's compatriot Wang Xue also finished ahead of a Canadian in the women's race to take gold, as Caroline Truchon had to settle for second place, followed by Russian Emina Malagich.

"I didn't expect this medal, because it was the first time that I took part in such an important event at international level," said 20-year-old Wang.

"I was very nervous, but I was able to perform well."

At Monte Bondone the dominant colour was red and white as Austrian snowboarders took both the men's and women's titles in the parallel giant slalom competition.

Sebastian Kislinger showed his class to take the men's gold medal ahead of Italian Aaron March and Tim Mstnak of Slovenia, while Julia Dujmovits headed and Austrian one-two in the women's event, as she beat teammate Sabine Shoeffmann with Germany's Selina Joerg taking the bronze.

Over in Lago di Tesero, Ukraine and Kazakhstan were celebrating Universiade gold in the cross-country relay competitions.

The women's 3x5 kilometre race saw Kateryna Grygorenko, Maryna Antsybor and Kateryna Serdyuk take the win despite getting off to a relatively poor start.

But, in the second and third legs the Ukrainians reeled in their opponents to eventually cross the line first ahead of Sweden and Kazakhstan.

In the men's 4x10km competition, Kazakhstan swapped the bottom of the podium for the top as Aleksandr Malyshev, Sergey Malyshev, Gennadiy Matvyenko and Mark Starostin prevailed over Russia, although the margin of victory was just 1.1sec.

Bronze went to Finland.
