The national body is calling on creative sports fans of all ages to have a go at creating the iconic emblem that will be worn by the athletes as they compete in this year's event.

"We want to engage both young and old in the spirit of the Games as we get closer to July," Robert McVeigh, chair of the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council, said.

"This is a great opportunity for our creative minds in Northern Ireland to design elements of the pin that embody the spirit of the team, its history and celebrate sport."

The winning design will include elements that "embody what it means to be from Northern Ireland", be symbolic of the team and must be recognisable on something as small as a 10p coin.

The competition winner will have their unique design featured on the pin and they will receive an invitation to a special reception.

Designs must be submitted by email to [email protected] or by post to 11 Great Northern Street, Belfast, BT9 7FJ no later than March 17, 2014.

There will also be a draw open only to Primary School students that will give them a chance to win one of 10 Activ8 Sports Day Packs from Sport Northern Ireland.
