Eleven people have formed the Athletes' Commission, which will sit for a three-year term until 2017.

They met for the first time on Saturday (May 31) to appoint the key roles within the Commission.

Yip Ren Kai, a 31-year-old former national water polo player who represented Singapore in the Southeastern (SEA) Games and Asian Games, was elected chairperson.

Fencer Ruth Ng will serve as vice chairperson, with bowler Jasmine Yeong honorary secretary.

The make-up of the Commission was chosen via a nomination process at the 2013 SEA Games.

As well as representing their peers, they are also tasked with promoting Olympism, sporting excellence, fair play and athlete development, together with maintaining contact with the International Olympic Committee Athletes' Commission.

Speaking of the mix between active and former athletes, Yip said: "I hope with our skill sets and experience, we are able to help athletes and be a fair voice for them in the SNOC."

During their first meeting, the Commission mapped out its short-term and long-term goals, and the steps needed to achieve them.

They also talked about issues currently faced by their peers and the desire to work with stakeholders to help athletes in their careers post-competing.
