Speedo will be the official swimwear provider for the Games, supplying Glasgow 2014 with swimwear and equipment including caps, goggles and training aids.

The company will also give technical support to athletes when required and provide backstroke flags for the Games.

"Speedo is the world's leading swimwear brand and we are excited to have them on board as an official provider for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games," said David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 chief executive.

"This support ensures that the highest quality swimwear and accessories are available to athletes competing in swimming and triathlon."

Speedo was founded in Australia in 1914 by Scotsman, Alexander MacRae, under the name "fortitude" as a knitwear factory in Sydney's Regent Street.

In 1928, Jim Parsons won a competition to name the new non-wool swimsuit created by fortitude with his entry "Speed on in your Speedos" - the name Speedo was born.

The brand is now distributed to more than 170 countries all over the world.

"We are delighted to be an official provider for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games," said Sean Hastings, vice-president of product and marketing at Speedo International.

"It is a prestigious event and one with which Speedo has a long standing association.

"We are looking forward to seeing swimmers win medals in our Fastskin swimsuits.

"Speedo wishes all teams the best of luck."
