Steve Le Couilliard will carry the Jersey flag for a second time during the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow ©Morag ObarskaShooter Steve Le Couilliard will be the Jersey flagbearer for a second time at a Commonwealth Games in Scotland as he has been bestowed with the honour for the Opening Ceremony of Glasgow 2014 after also carrying the flag at Edinburgh 1986.

The 61-year-old is set to compete in his seventh Games this year after making his debut in Edmonton in 1978 and he revealed his pride at being selected for the role once again.

"As a Jerseyman it's lovely to be pushing Jersey forward and be involved in Jersey sport," said Le Couilliard, whose best finish at a Games was fourth in the 50 metre rifle prone competition at Edinburgh 1986.

"I was overwhelmed when it was announced at the team meeting.

"Unless you become a member of the Great Britain team for the Olympics there's no higher competition for a Jerseyman to compete in.

"To be a part of the Jersey Commonwealth Games team is what it's all about for most competitive shooters.

"That's what they want to do; they want to be part of this team."

Le Couilliard did not compete in Delhi four years ago and will lead a team of seven shooters at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre.

Joining him on the small bore rifle team are David Turner and Richard Bouchard.

The experienced Barry Le Cheminant will be competing in the full bore rifle events 28 years after his last Commonwealth Games appearance in Edinburgh, along with Daniel Richardson, who will be making his second Games appearance while Nikki Holmes and 19-year-old George Winstanley make-up the pistol team.

The biggest squad representing Jersey this year comes in lawn bowls where Chris Grimes, Lindsey Greechan, Alison Camacho, Susan Noel and Katie Nixon make up the ladies team with the men's line-up consisting of Greg Davies, Thomas Greechan, John Lowery, Jamie Macdonald and Malcolm de Sousa.

Jersey is sending a total of 40 athletes to Glasgow later this month in what will be one of the largest squads yet since the island's debut at the Cardiff Games in 1958.

Shooting has provided Jersey's sole gold medal when Colin Mallett won the open full bore rifle Queen's prize at Auckland in 1990, where he and father Cliff also took bronze in the full bore open competition.

Boxer Albert Turmel secured the island's first Commonwealth Games medal in 1962 in Perth with a bronze, while John Sillitoe also claimed boxing bronze at Edinburgh in 1986.

Elizabeth Cann and Mark Constable previously won Commonwealth Games bronze medals representing England but will lead Jersey's badminton team in Glasgow alongside Marianna Agathangelou, Solenn Pasturel and Alex Hutchins.

Rhys Hidrio, James Patterson, Chris Spence and Richard Tanguy will compete in cycling events, with Ian Black and Tom Gallichan taking to the pool while Charlotte Pollard is the sole gymnast on the team.

Craig Gasgoyne, Kelsey Le Maistre and Josh Band from the table tennis team while Nick Taylor, Sarah Taylor and Scott Gautier will compete in squash.

A three-strong athletics squad of Zane Duquemin, Shadine Duquemin and Simon Phelan will compete at Hampden Park while triathletes Daniel Halksworth and Tom Perchard complete the Jersey squad that will be led by Chef de Mission Paul Huddlestone.
