The auction closed at 7.30pm today and 101 people put in bids for, what Scottish officials described as, "perhaps the most coveted piece of sporting equipment available from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games".

The same was also used earlier the same day on August 2 during the 4x100m women's relay final by Nigeria, who claimed the silver medals, and also during the 4x400m men's relay final by Trinidad and Tobago, who won the bronze. 

The winning bidder will receive the baton in an acrylic case to display and protect this valuable artefact.

It also comes affixed with the Official Memorabilia of Glasgow 2014 hologram and is accompanied by the product guarantee and registration certificate.

Other items closed today included the baton used by England's men when they won the men's 4x400m and silver in the 4x100m, as well as by Jamaica's women as they claimed gold in the 4x100m, which had a top bid of £690.01 ($1,151.37/€861.25)

Even the baton used Antigua and Barbuda, when they finished seventh behind Jamaica in the men's 4x100m relay, proved popular drawing a top bid of £450 ($750/€562).

The auction is due to feature around 10,000 premium articles or assets from the Games over a two-month period.

Typically, items will go on sale for three to four days but featured memorabilia - like Bolt's baton - can be on auction for up to 10 days.

There are thousands of registered users bidding daily on the site, and around 150 items are added each day as memorabilia is sold off.

Currently the item which has attracted the highest bid is the 4x4 Ford used by John Barrowman during the Opening Ceremony. 

The tartan-clad vehicle described by Glasgow 2014 as "Unique. One of a Kind. Iconic. Scottish. Extraordinary. Priceless", has so far attracted 36 bids with a highest of £5,700 ($9,500/€7,110).

Bidding is due to close on August 21.

At the other end of the scale, a green dress used by one of the performers in the Opening Ceremony is available for just £1 ($1.65/€1.25).

All the money raised will be used to help pay for the costs of hosting Glasgow 2014.
