This request broke the almost obsessive promotion of "selfies" here but continuing the same theme of using social media to promote the Games, is a "token of friendship" in line with the "Olympic Spirit".

"Share this token of friendship with the world and post it with #Nanjing2014," Bach said.

The message came midway through a Ceremony that paid homage to these Games and all the components that have made it successful, particularly volunteers, of which six representatives were awarded flowers by a group of athletes in recognition of their work.

Although they remained in the stand throughout rather than making an appearance on the stage, athletes also figured strongly and, in an innovative move never seen before at the Closing Ceremony of an Olympic Games, an Athletes' Oath was recited.

This was read out by China's 17-year-old swimming prodigy, Shen Duo, winner of six gold medals at these Games.

The themes she read out in her message were epitomised subsequently, with the artistic section beginning with the letters of the word "Nanjing" being spelt out across the floor, before the lower case letter 'n' rose to form a gateway, representing the welcoming and young-oriented nature of the host city.

Once again there were references to the location and to Chinese history, including Confucius' Temple, but this was interspersed with the predominant themes of youth and innovation, with the Nanjing 2014 song, Light up the Future, closing proceedings.

The most disappointing aspect of the evening was the Buenos Aires 2018 section and, although it is not customary for future Youth Olympics hosts to do special segments like those seen at senior Games, the absence of the Argentine capital's Mayor, Mauriscio Macri, was surprising.

The highlight of the short video played to showcase the next Summer Youth Olympic host city was provided by a cameo appearance from football legend and Buenos Aires 2018 Ambassador Lionel Messi, earning one of the loudest cheers of the evening from the crowd.

In front of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who was present instead of President Xi Jinping, the crowd were enthusiastic and loud throughout, obviously enjoying a final opportunity to showcase their city to the world.

This was something highlighted in the other speech, by Nanjing 2014 President Li Xueyrong, who focused around the contribution the Games he claimed had made for the future of the Youth Olympics.

"Our joint efforts have made the Games spectacular and unforgettable, opening a new chapter for the Olympic Movement," he declared.

"Dear friends, the end of Nanjing 2014 represents a new beginning for the Youth Olympic Games.

"Let us start from here with cherished hope and dreams to promote the Olympic spirit and build a better future."
