The partnership between the COP and the CML aims to promote the Olympic spirit in events and competitions organised by the latter, focusing particularly on young people.

Local Government plays an important role in sports development in Portugal, by acting at various levels of sporting life.

The COP aims to achieve closer relations with municipalities through the values of Olympism and sport.

The partnership extends to other aspects such as the involvement of local authorities in Olympic Day and the participation of the COP in local authorities' initiatives related to sport.

Thus, the CML may use the title of "Olympic City & Solidarity".

President of the COP, José Manuel Constantino, and Lisbon city councillor for sports, Jorge Máximo, were both present at the event held at the COP headquarters.

Portugal claimed just one medal at London 2012, which was a silver in the men's kayak double 1,000 metre event.
