The IIHF Womens under-18 World Championships threw up some interesting results on WednesdayCanada, Sweden, Finland and the United States all earned victories at the preliminary stage of the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championships.

In a repeat of the final of the men's 2015 World Junior Championship, the women enjoyed the same success as the men as Canada edged a tight match 3-2.

Much like the World Junior final - where Canada lead 5-1 before being pegged back to 5-4 - the Canadians went into a comfortable lead before a late revival from Russia proved to be in vein.

In the other match in Group A, the US earned their second victory in a row with a win over the Czech Republic thanks to a dominant third period in which Caitrin Lonergan and Melissa Samoskevich added two late goals to seal their automatic bye to the semi-final stage.

Meanwhile there was a dramatic comeback in the other group as Finland fought back from a two-goal deficit in the first quarter to win a thrilling contest 4-2.

Japan were cruising thanks to goals from Aoi Shiga and Moe Tsukimoto, but the Finns - who had endured a scoring drought during the competition so far - levelled proceedings as Ronja Savolainen and Sanni Hakala both found the net.

The turnaround was completed in the final period when Nelli Salomaki's scored, and Hakala made sure late on to earn a valiant victory.

The other game in Group B was far more straightforward as Sweden preserved their unbeaten record with a comfortable win over Switzerland, with Kajsa Armborg and captain Jessica Adolfsson both at the double to send the Swedes to the top of the standings.

The final round of matches take place tomorrow as the USA entertain Russia and Canada face the winless Czechs in Group A.

Group B ends with table-topping Sweden against Finland and Switzerland against Japan.
