By registering here, fans will be able to receive all the latest information regarding tickets for the Olympic Games, including the competition schedule, while they will be given alerts ahead of key dates in the purchasing process.

Non-Brazilian residents will be able to apply for tickets through an authorised ticket reseller, selected by their National Olympic Committee and Rio 2016, with the list of those authorised to be made available in March.

A Rio 2016 spokesperson explained to insidethegames that fans will be able to choose and buy tickets through these specific resellers from March.

Residents of Brazil, meanwhile, will be invited to apply to buy tickets via two separate random draws in what is a similar lottery process to that conducted in Britain ahead of the London 2012 Games.

The first such draw will be held in March, with the results coming through in June.

The second draw for tickets will take place in July, with those unsuccessful in the first one taking priority, ahead of the results being announced in August,

Following the draws, the remaining tickets will then be sold online to Brazilian residents via the online portal from October 2015, with this being extended to non-Brazilian residents in January 2016.

"We will have a fair and transparent process, in line with the concept of 'Games for All', which is one of the pillars of Rio 2016," said Renato Ciuchini, chief commerical officer of Rio 2016.

The launch comes days after news emerged that ticket-holders for the Games who attempt to resell tickets illegally could face fines of 100 times the face value of any ticket sold.

More than half of the tickets will be available for BRL R$70 (£18/$27/€23) or less, with the cheapest tickets for the Games priced at BRL R$40 (£10/$15/€13) in a bid to see that all sections of Brazilian society will be able to attend, with some half-price tickets also being made available to senior citizens, students and the disabled, of a Brazilian residency.

It is hoped a total of 7.5 million tickets will be sold for the Games. 

"Fans will experience this journey like an athlete, preparing and going through stages until the glory of arriving at the Games," said Rio 2016 ticketing director Donovan Ferreti.

"With so many great attractions, it is necessary to get organised early to ensure you don't miss the best of the event."

Details concerning the ticket sales process for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will be announced at a different time.
