Danish city Kolding has been awarded the 2017 European Badminton Championships, it has been announced.

Badminton Europe confirmed the decision to take its flagship event back to Denmark, which hosted the Championships in 1996 and 2008.

Kolding, in the southern part of the country, is one of the six Danish municipalities making up the Triangle Region cooperation.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Tre-For Arena from April 25 to 30.

"We are happy to allocate our biggest event to Denmark," said Brian Agerbak, general secretary of Badminton Europe.

"I am sure that the tournament will be organised at a very high level.

"With Badminton Denmark we will have a great partner who will try to seek new standards in organising European Championships.

"That fits very well with our ambitions to continuously increase the standard of the event."

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, played host to last year’s World Championships at the Ballerup Super Arena, while the 1996 European Championships were held in the Danish city of Herning.

"It is again a fantastic opportunity to present our sport with international focus in Denmark after the successful World Championships in 2014,” said Rene Toft, President of Badminton Denmark.

“We will work hard to give the spectators a great experience and we want to present our sport in an innovative manner.”

Sport Event Denmark, the national sporting event organisation, is also pleased with the awarding of the event to Denmark.

"Badminton has a strong tradition sporting wise and in terms of hosting events," said chief executive Lars Lundov.

"Following the successful World Championships in Denmark last summer it is a pleasure to announce the European Championships 2017 to be staged in the dynamic Triangle Area.

"At the same time this is a brilliant window in order to attract another World Championship in the coming years."

Badminton is set to feature as part of this month’s European Games, scheduled to take place in Baku from Friday (June 12) to June 28.

The sport’s competitions will be played out at the refurbished Baku Sports Hall from June 22 to 28.

Last year's European Championships took place in Kazan, Russia with next year's due to be hosted by France, who were awarded the rights in June 2013.
