Defending champions The Netherlands will again be the ones to beat when the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Nations Cup Jumping Final takes place at the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona from September 24 to 27.

The team of Jeroen Dubbeldam, Gerco Schröder, Leopold Van Asten, Maikel Van Der Vleuten and Jur Vrieling come into the event in excellent form after they took gold at the FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France last year.

Led by coach Rob Ehrens, the Dutch quintet are strong favourites to retain the crown they won at the second-ever Nations Cup Jumping Final in 2014 and have already topped the podium in the FEI European Championships in Aachen, Germany this year.

Dubbeldam added to the Dutch dominance in the German town by securing the individual European crown.

The Netherlands’ toughest challenge in Barcelona is likely to come from France, comprised of Timothee Anciaume, Roger Yves Bost, Nicolas Delmotte, Penelope Leprevost and Kevin Staut, who were victorious in the inaugural Nations Cup Jumping Final in 2013.

Other contenders include Belgium, winners of the Europe Division 1 qualifying series, Britain, who qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with their performance in Aachen, Switzerland and Sweden, while an all-female American side could also compete for a podium finish.

The event at the Real Club de Polo, which hosted equestrian events at the 1992 Olympic Games, also offers competitors the chance to win €1.5 million (£1.1 million/$1.7 million) split between the members of the winning team, with a further bonus for those who jump clear in the first round and in the final.

A total of 19 countries spanning the length and breadth of the world will descend on the Spanish city, with the showpiece finale due to take place next Sunday (September 27).
