The 32-year-old American was vying to surpass the distance of 46.882 kilometres achieved by Australia’s Bridie O’Donnell at the Adelaide Super-Drome on January 22.

Stevens remained on schedule to set the record throughout the duration of her ride at the Velodrome, located at 6,000 feet above sea level and is covered by a newly-constructed winter dome.

The five-time Road World Championships time trial medallist, a rider for the Dutch registered Boels-Dolmans team, showed her expertise in maintaining a long-distance effort as she eventually finished with a distance of 47.980km, 1,098 metres further than O’Donnell’s effort.

“It’s not common that you get the chance to set a new World Record,” said Stevens.

“Could not have been a more perfect day, I just want to celebrate with everyone now.”

Stevens’ attempt was the fourth by a woman since the governing body’s ruling that the record could be broken on an aerodynamic bike in May 2014.

Britain’s Sarah Storey and America’s Molly Shaffer Van Houweling both attempted the feat in 2015, with the latter’s attempt proving successful.

With Stevens’ success the record returns to American hands, after O’Donnell had beaten Van Houweling’s effort.

“Bridie O’Donnell’s record stood for five weeks and we have already seen two attempts this year despite only being in February.

“Two years after the rule change, riders’ interest in the UCI hour record has not waned.

“From Europe to North America via Oceania, one after another the athletes are pitting their strength against our sport’s legendary event.”
