Defending champions Canada maintained their 100 per cent start to the men’s International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship as they thrashed Belarus 8-0 at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in St. Petersburg.

The Canadian outfit ran riot once again to keep hold of top spot in Group B with another superb performance on their way to a third straight victory.

Derick Brassard broke the deadlock in the first period before the 2015 winners added another four goals in the second thanks to captain Corey Perry, Ryan O’Reilly, Matt Duchene and Taylor Hall.

That four-goal salvo put the result of the match beyond all doubt but Canada weren’t finished there as O’Reilly added his second of the match to extend their lead to 6-0.

Mark Stone and Michael Matheson then added their names to the scoresheet in the third period to cap off a resounding win for the reigning Olympic champions.

“There’s a lot of offense, there’s a lot of skill, there’s a lot of youth,” Perry said.

“I’ve said this since day one - we’re excited to be here, put this jersey on, and play for our country.”

Finland are the only other side in the tournament to have won their first three games as they kept their perfect record going with a slender 3-2 success over last year’s bronze medallists the United States.

Mikko Koivu put the Scandinavian nation ahead with a well-taken strike before Antti Pihlstrom doubled their advantage shortly after.

But the United States fought back valiantly and halved the deficit when Frank Vatrano’s clever effort found the back of the net as a frenetic opening stanza continued.

They were made to wait until 53 seconds into the third period to draw level as Connor Murphy struck to restore parity.

Just it as it seemed the game would be heading for a draw, Leo Komarov scored what proved to be the winning goal to give Finland a victory that keeps them hot on the heels on Canada in the group.

Elsewhere, Russia picked up their second win of the competition as they beat Latvia 4-0 in Group A at the Moscow Ice Palace.

In the other match at the venue, the Czech Republic, who stunned the home crowd with an opening day triumph against the host nation, kept up their unbeaten record by edging Sweden 4-2.
