A virtual reality application has been launched by leading broadcaster Eurosport during this year’s ongoing French Open at Roland Garros in Paris.

Eurosport VR will include daily highlights of the top matches and features elements such as “shot of the day”.

It will also comprise of behind the scenes footage, which will be screened in virtual reality in a bid to enhance coverage around the second Grand Slam of the season, due to conclude on June 5.

At the tournament, fans can also experience a 360 degree-view of exclusive player inteviews.

It is hoped the launch of the Eurosport VR application, which is available on Android and iOS and is compatible with virtual reality platforms Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard, will enable the broadcaster to showcase different methods of covering the tournament.

The application will be available to house further VR content from Eurosport throughout the year.

Highlights and footage is available at the end of each day’s play, beginning on Sunday (May 22) and ending after the men’s singles final on June 5.

Eurosport developed a similar application alongside Discovery Communications, which allowed spectators the chance to see a 360-degree view of Vancouver 2010 gold medallist and four-time world champion Bode Miller of the United States’ run during the Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Beaver Creek last year.

“We continually strive to deliver new and exciting ways for fans to immerse themselves in world-class sport,” Eurosport chief executive Peter Hutton said.

“Using innovative production technologies, the Eurosport VR app will transport fans right to the heart of the action and bring them closer than ever to their heroes.

“There was an amazing reaction to our first VR video featuring Bode Miller and we can’t wait for fans to experience tennis in VR, many for the very first time.”
