Olympic aquatics events in 2024 will take place in Saint-Denis if Paris is successful with its bid for the Games in eight years' time.

Organisers in the French capital have announced that a new Aquatics Centre would be built in the suburb which is also home to the Stade de France - the proposed Olympic Stadium for 2024.

It would be built at La Plaine Saulnier and house two 50 metre swimming pools and two diving pools.

Capacity during the Games would be 15,000 with this later reduced to 2,500.

The Aquatics Centre, which would host swimming, synchronised swimming and diving, was the last proposed venue Paris needed to confirm and the only one which will be constructed from scratch.

It will be connected to the Stade de France - where Paris wants to hold athletics and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies - by a pedestrian bridge.

Organisers claim the new venue will become a "central pillar" in the Saint-Denis community.

“The site of La Plaine Saulnier in the cosmopolitan suburb of Saint-Denis offers many advantages for the Paris 2024 bid," said Paris 2024 co-chairman Tony Estanguet.

"The new, state-of-the-art facility will be a spectacular venue for Olympic sport providing optimal conditions for world class performances and a fantastic atmosphere for fans watching in the arena and those watching on TV and digital platforms around the world.

“The new venue’s close proximity to the Stade de France and the Athletes’ Village enhances the compactness of the Paris 2024 bid with great accessibility for athletes, spectators and media.

"The new Olympic sports hub will serve as central pillar in the Saint-Denis community bringing even more Olympic sport to the city, further embedding Olympism in everyday life in Paris and creating a strong legacy for the youth population.

“Paris 2024 will be spectacular Games of style and substance and a wonderful celebration of Olympic sport.

"The new Aquatics Centre is a symbol of Paris’ creativity and dynamism strengthening sport’s role in society across the city – we are thrilled that plans for all of the proposed Paris 2024 venues are now laid out in full.”

Paris is battling against Budapest, Los Angeles and Rome for the rights to host in 2024.

A decision will be announced by the International Olympic Committee in Peru's capital Lima next year.
