Paul Walters has been appointed as event director for the 2017 Professional Squash Association (PSA) Men’s and Women’s World Championships in Manchester, it was announced today.

Walters has extensive experience in the field having performed the role at three successful World Championships, alongside the AJ Bell British Squash Grand Prix, held annually in Manchester and the British Open.

Around 200 of the world’s best players are due to descend on Manchester for the event, due to be staged from December 9 to 17.

Matches at the tournament in Manchester, the only city to host concurrent world championships twice and the first to do so since 2011, will be held at the National Squash Centre before quarter-finals are staged in Manchester Central.

Next year’s competition will also be historic as men and women will receive equal prize money for the first time.

The winners of both tournaments will be rewarded with a sum of $45,000 (£34,000/€40,000), the PSA has confirmed.

"It’s a great privilege to be working with these stakeholders to help deliver a wonderful showcase for squash at such an exciting time for the sport."

England Squash director and chair of the Championship Stakeholder Board Eamonn O’Rourke added that he was "delighted" Walters would be taking on the role for the competition, the PSA’s flagship event.

"Following the success of the 2008 and 2013 Squash World Championships, we are delighted once again to be working with Paul to deliver the Championships to an unprecedented level," he said.

"Already we have pushed the boundaries with delivering both the men’s and women’s event concurrently, and ensuring equal prize money."

The 2017 edition of the event will be the third to be held in Manchester.

The city also hosted the competition in 2008 and 2013.
