Peter Michael of New Zealand lived up to his favourite billing as he clinched a second individual gold medal at the World Speed Skating Championships at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park Roller Skating Court.

Michael, considered one of the leading names in the sport, demonstrated his multi-discipline ability by adding the 1,000 metres sprint crown to the 15,000m title he won on the opening day of the event in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games host city.

The New Zealander clocked a time of 1min 21.638sec to deny Colombia yet another gold at the International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) sanctioned event.

Two athletes from the South American nation - Andres Muñoz and Andres Jiminez - did push Michael all the way but they eventually had to settle for silver and bronze medals respectively.

Italy proved to be the dominant country on day three as they sealed two of the four gold medals on offer.

Francesca Lollobrigida, 23rd in the 3,000m speed skating race at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, powered to the women’s 1,000m sprint title in 1:27.686.

Their second victory came when their women’s 3,000m relay team surged to the top of the podium in what was a hard-fought race, with Colombia a fraction adrift of the winning time of 4:12.933.

The South American team stopped the clock at 4:12.954, narrowly in front of South Korea.

Fabriana Arias of Colombia kept the country’s impressive medal showing at the World Championships going as she took the silver medal, crossing the line in 1:28.403.

Colombia did taste gold medal success today thanks to their men’s 3,000m relay team, who clocked 3:59.714 to beat France and Argentina.

The event in the Chinese city is due to continue tomorrow.
