China had won every gold medal since sitting volleyball was introduced at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, but that streak was brought to a comprehensive end as the US powered to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-18 win. 

It was sweet revenge for the Americans who had lost to China in the finals at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympic Games.

"We have never beaten them in the final and you know what? I don't think it's hit us yet," said Lora Webster.  

"It shows how far we've come as a team and it is the ultimate way to end the Games."

The top spiker for the match was the US’s Monique Burkland with 11, while team-mate Webster was the top blocker with five and Kaleo Kanahele the top server with two aces.

China’s top scorer was Sheng Yuhong with six points, four spikes and two blocks.

In the bronze medal match, hosts Brazil defeated Ukraine 25-12, 25-22, 25-20.

Victory was inspired by top scorer Janaina Cunha’s 22 points - 17 spikes, three blocks and two serves - and ensured a first-ever Paralympic medal for the Brazilian women’s sitting volleyball team.

Ilona Yudina scored most for Ukraine with 12 points - seven spikes and five blocks.

The men's medal matches are due to take place tomorrow as Bosnia and Herzegovina meet Iran in the battle for gold and Egypt face Brazil for a place on the podium.
