The Women's World Championship of Rink Hockey continued at the Play Brava venue in Iquique in Chile today as the group stages entered the penultimate round of matches.

In front of a packed crowd there were seven pool stage games with teams beginning to emerge as possible quarter-finalists.

Defending champions Argentina continued their ominous form so far as they thumped fellow South Americans Brazil 14-0 in Group A.

Brazil had already played earlier in the day, however, where they collected an impressive win of their own as they defeated Egypt 10-1.

In the third and final match in Group A on Monday, Italy and Colombia shared the points after they drew 1-1 in the tightest affair of the tournament so far.

In Group B, the top two teams in France and Spain faced off eager to strengthen their position at the top of the table.

It is the Spanish team who look well placed to secure qualification as group winners though as a Maria Diez hat-trick helped them to a 7-2 win.

Elsewhere, Portugal produced a stunning performance as they thrashed South Africa 14-0.

Marlene Sousa scored four whilst Ines Vicente, Rute Lopes and Marta Vieira all managed hat-tricks before Sofia Silva added another.

The biggest win of the day, however, was claimed by the hosts, Chile, who coasted past India 18-0 in Group C.

There were some sublime performances from the Chilean team including from Catalina Flores and Francisca Donoso, who each scored five and six goals respectively.

Elsewhere in Group C, Germany all but secured their place in the last eight as they dominated the USA 10-1.

This is the last stand-alone World Championship in the history of rink hockey because, starting from next year, the World Roller Games will join all three rink hockey World Championships - male, female and male under-20 - together for a single event in Nanjing in China.

The event is also enjoying complete TV coverage thanks to CDO, a Chilean cable-broadcasting company, and Canal 13.

FIRS TV, meanwhile, is streaming the event live online.
