The decision was taken at the BWF Council meeting in Bilbao, where bids from the National Paralympic Committee of China and the Korea Badminton Association for the Disabled (KBAD) were assessed.

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer congratulated both on their vision of providing a world-class experience for Para-badminton athletes globally, but Ulsan were revealed as the successful bid.

"We are honoured to have received two really comprehensive bids which is very promising for the future of the Para-Badminton World Championships," said Høyer.

"The application from the City of Ulsan showed strong public and community engagement and it was clear that the city and community are very much behind the Championships."

Høyer also reflected on the importance of next year’s tournament as the sport continues to build towards Tokyo 2020, where it will make its Paralympic debut.

It is hoped the KBAD will build on the signature Para-badminton events they have held in recent years, including the 2009 Para-Badminton World Championships and the 2012 Asian Para-Badminton Championships.

The country also held the 2014 Asian Para-Championships in which badminton competition was featured.

Strong technical aspects of the South Korean bid, in addition to their history of staging competitions, was viewed as key to Ulsan being awarded the event.

Organisers are claiming they expect to host more athletes at the 11th edition of the Championships than previous editions, when the competition takes place next November.

The most recent Para-Badminton World Championships took place last year in Stoke Mandeville, with 232 athletes from 35 nations competing in 22 medal events.
