Japan’s Asa Ando produced the fastest second run of the women’s giant slalom event here at the 2017 Winter Universiade today to claim the gold medal.

The 20-year-old trailed leader Desiree Ajlec of Slovenia by 0.68 seconds after the first run at the Shymbulak Ski Resort, but posted a superb time of 1 min 09.70sec in the second to secure a winning overall result of 2:25.68.

Ajlec could only manage the 10th best time in the second run, meaning she finished 1.13sec behind Ando in the final reckoning.

Rounding out the podium was Belarus’ Maria Shkanova, 1.60 back.

Ando's victory sees her add to the bronze medal she won in the women's super-G on Monday (January 30).

Shkanova, a two-time Olympian, also doubled her medal tally having won silver in the Alpine combined event.

Alpine skiing action is due to continue tomorrow with the men's giant slalom.
