Unseeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko secured her place in the semi-finals of the French Open after upsetting former world number one Caroline Wozniacki on a rain-affected day at Roland Garros.

The 19-year-old beat her Danish opponent 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to become the first teenager to reach the penultimate stage of the Grand Slam event since 2007, when Serbia's Ana Ivanovic achieved the feat.

Next up for Ostapenko is a meeting with 27-year-old Swiss Timea Bacsinszky, who overcame home favourite Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-4.

Play was stopped twice today due to torrential rain with both matches concluding within half an hour of the third re-start.

"It was tough because we had to go away two times from the court," Ostapenko, the world number 47, said.

"Caroline is a tough opponent.

"I knew I had to stay aggressive.

"I lost it sometimes but I found my game."

Both Ostapenko and Bacsinszky, the 30th seed, will celebrate their birthdays when they meet on Thursday (June 8).

The rain delays meant Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will have to wait until tomorrow to contest their quarter-finals after men’s play was postponed.

Nine-time winner Nadal was due to face fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, while defending champion Djokovic of Serbia was scheduled to go up against Austria’s Dominic Thiem.

But their outings have been put back a day, joining the other two men's quarter-final clashes.

Tomorrow's line-up on the clay also sees Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka go up against Croatia’s Marin Cilic and Great Britain’s Sir Andy Murray do battle with Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
