Top seed Gustavo Fernandez was forced to recover from a set down before progressing while second ranked Gordon Reid was beaten today at the US Open United States Tennis Association Wheelchair Championships in St Louis.

It came in the quarter-finals of the men's singles draw at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.

Frenchman Stephane Houdet also reached the semi-finals as he seeks a third successive title.

Argentina's Fernandez lost the opening set against Dutch eighth seed Maikel Scheffers before bouncing back to win in three.

He eventually triumphed 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Reid, meanwhile, was unable to mount a similar recovery as he lost 6-4, 7-6(4) to seventh seed Shingo Kunieda of Japan.

Britain still has a representative, however, as Alfie Hewett set up a semi-final with Fernandez.

He also recovered from a set down before beating French fifth seed Nicolas Peifer 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Houdet completed the last four lineup by defeating Belgium's sixth seed Joachim Gerard 6-2, 6-3.

It comes in the 32nd edition of the world’s oldest wheelchair tennis tournament, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

Action is due to continue tomorrow before concluding on Sunday (September 3).

Quads and women's singles competitions are also taking place.
