The Games in the Olympic capital will be the first edition of the Winter Youth Olympics to feature a number of changes to the event.

It includes a "two-wave" system of athletes' arrival, which will allow more competitors to take part.

Athletes will be able to condense their length of stay, meaning no need for additional beds in the Youth Olympic Village. 

The IOC claim this will allow for a 70 per cent increase in athlete numbers and "offering full gender equality by rotating the participants’ presence in the host city".

Lausanne 2020 will also feature new disciplines seeking to reflect the twin goals of innovation and gender equality.

These include a mixed-nationality 3x3 ice hockey tournament, a women’s doubles competition in luge and the introduction of a women’s Nordic combined ski event. 

Ski mountaineering was also added to the programme by the IOC Executive Board in July.

Additional venues are not expected to be required.

"It’s a true opportunity that Lausanne 2020 has seized," Baumann, a member of the IOC and President of the Global Association of International Sports Federations, said.

"In addition, these historical changes are being carried out within the existing budgets and deadlines.

"Two years ago in Kuala Lumpur, my team and I made you the promise that Lausanne 2020 would be the start of something new.

"I am happy to report that we will keep our promise.”

Lausanne 2020 chief executive Ian Logan hailed the "fantastic opportunity" hosting the Winter Youth Olympics provides for the city.

"In Lausanne, we see this as a fantastic way to transition from an Olympic Capital to a true Olympic City, one that hopefully will make us all proud," he said.
