The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) has launched its first-ever Youth Games with the goal of inspiring young athletes.

It is hoped that 48,000 people, including 23,210 athletes, will take part at the Games which will be take place over four months.

Sports will include football, kabaddi, basketball, volleyball, handball, hockey, athletics, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu, shooting, archery, badminton, boxing, chess, judo, karate, squash and taekwondo.

"We hope this Youth Games will create a sporting vibe all over the country and youths will be more interested in taking up different games," said BOA vice president Bashir Ahmed Mamun,

"We also hope to get some real talent through the meet.

The BOA has organised "torch rallies" to be held before the Games in every district, in a bid to "create hype".

"We have taken every necessary step to make the event a success," added BOA secretary general Syed Shahed Reza.

Reza added: "We hope this initiative will create a sporting environment at the district level and we also expect that talented players and organisers will come out through this."

General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq was re-elected as BOA President in April.

The Asian nation has competed at every Summer Olympics since Los Angeles 1984 but is still awaiting their first medal.

With an approximate population of 170 million, is the most populous country in the world never to have won an Olympic medal

Early plans were announced for the Youth Games in 2014 to try and improve international performances.

At Rio 2016, the country sent seven athletes to compete in the Brazilian city.

Men's golfer Siddikur Rahman served as flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony and was joined by archer Shamoli Ray, 100 metres sprinters Masbah Ahmmed and Shirin Akter, shooter Abdullah Hel Baki and swimmers Sonia Aktar and Mahfizur Rahman Sagor.
