The ski resort of Erzurum will become the first Turkish venue to host an International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard Cross World Cup event this weekend.

The competition will comprise of one individual and one team event.

The individual event will be of significant importance as it gives the riders a final qualifying opportunity for next month's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

Five-time World Champion Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States currently holds the lead in the women’s standings with 3,380 points to her name.

She has suffered a loss in form lately, however, with the last two events being won by Italy’s Michela Moioli, so the American will be looking to ensure she increases her gap at the top of the table in Erzurum.

The men’s standings are currently led by Alex Pullin of Australia, winner of the opening two events of the World Cup season on Cero Catedral in Argentina.

After failing to finish on the podium in the following two events, Pullin, a gold medallist at the 2011 and 2013 FIS Snowboarding World Championships in La Molina in Spain, and Stoneham in Canada respectively, claimed bronze in the Italian venue Cervinia last time out.

Pullin’s closest challenger in Erzurum is likely to be France’s 2014 Olympic champion Pierre Vaultier, currently second in the snowboard cross rankings on 2,520 points.

Erzurum will also hold the second team event of the season after Montafon in  Austria, hosted the first in mid-December.

Spain will be looking to follow up their win in the men’s event, while France will be keen to add to their women's victory.

The competition in Erzurum is due to start with qualifiers tomorrow (January 19) before competition racing begins on Saturday (January 20), with the team event rounding off the weekend on Sunday (January 21).
