Serbia's United World Wrestling President Nenad Lalovic has been proposed as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board after winning a vote to be a summer sport representative.

insidethegames reported his success today before it was confirmed by the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).

Lalovic saw off opposition from Spain's Marisol Casado and France's Jean-Christophe Rolland, the respective heads of the International Triathlon Union and International Rowing Federation, to replace Taiwan's CK Wu on the ruling body.

Each ASOIF member had one vote, with two rounds of voting taking place after the first round was unable to produce a winner.

This result will now be rubber-stamped at next month's IOC Session in Pyeongchang.

The ASOIF position became vacant after Wu stepped down following his resignation as President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) amid a protracted power struggle within the sport's governing body.

The Taiwanese official had been a member of the IOC Executive Board since 2012.

Lalovic became an IOC member in 2015, when he was also chosen to represent the organisation on the World Anti-Doping Agency Foundation Board.

The Serbian is widely credited for wrestling's revival after it originally lost its place on the Olympic programme in 2013 before it was reinstated later that year.

"ASOIF announces that its members selected Nenad Lalovic, President of United World Wrestling, as ASOIF nomination for a position on the International Olympic Committee Executive Board," an ASOIF statement said. 

"The election of Lalovic as IOC EB Member will be on the agenda of the IOC Session, which will convene in Pyeongchang next month just ahead of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.  

"Following CK Wu's resignation as AIBA President, ASOIF Council member and IOC EB member in November 2017, ASOIF had contacted the IOC members in the International Federation category earlier this month to ascertain whether they wish to put their names forward. 

"Subsequently, ASOIF had received the candidatures from Marisol Casado, Nenad Lalovic and Jean-Christophe Rolland.

"Nenad Lalovic, President of UWW, emerged as the successful candidate following two rounds of online voting by the 28 full ASOIF members.

"In line with ASOIF rules and statutes, the ASOIF Council today approved the formal notification to the IOC, expressing support for Nenad Lalovic as ASOIF's nomination for the IOC Executive Board."
