The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) has changed its qualification process for the Paralympic Games and the World Championships by introducing repechage tournaments.

The top two best ranked countries which did not qualify automatically from each of the continental zones will be invited to play in the new events.

Three spaces in the men's Paralympic tournament will be up for grabs with one berth to play for in the women's.

For the World Championships, four repechage places will be on offer for the men and three for the women.

It is hoped the first of the new events will be played in late 2019 or early 2020 in time for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

The IWBF Executive Council unanimously agreed to introduce a new qualifying process in November and the new system has been confirmed following "considerable discussion and deliberations".

It has been designed to ensure representation from every continental zone while making sure that the world's best and most deserving teams qualifying.

"We are very excited to unveil the new qualification system, we believe this accommodates the growing number of countries and strength of competition across the world, as well as ensures the highest level of competition at major world events," said IWBF secretary general Maureen Orchard.

"We have been looking to increase marketing opportunities for IWBF and member nations, and the repechage tournament supports this objective.

"The logistics for the organisation of the competition in 2019/2020 are being developed, but we are sure that this opportunity will be very popular."
