Nine-time Paralympic swimming gold medallist Sophie Pascoe will carry the New Zealand flag at the Gold Coast 2018 Opening Ceremony, it was announced today.

The 25-year-old double Commonwealth Games champion, New Zealand's most successful Paralympian, said she was "humbled" by the honour of being her country's flagbearer here.

Pascoe was officially named by Chef de Mission Rob Waddell during a welcome ceremony for New Zealand's athletes.

"It's very humbling to have been chosen out of the many world champion athletes that we've created in New Zealand," said Pascoe, who has won a total of 15 medals at the Paralympic Games.

"I wasn't considered as a Paralympic athlete, I was considered as just one of the athletes of the New Zealand team so to lead that team out is very special and it'll be a moment to remember forever."

Pascoe follows in the footsteps of shot-putter Valerie Adams, the double Olympic champion who has three Commonwealth Games gold medals and four world titles in her collection.

Adams carried the flag at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

"What this athlete does transcends sport and touches the hearts and emotions of every New Zealander," said Waddell.

"She is an inspiration to all people.

"It was an honour to present Sophie with the New Zealand flag and name her as the New Zealand flagbearer for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"She will follow in the footsteps of some of New Zealand's greatest sportspeople when she leads the team into the Opening Ceremony tomorrow night."

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Carrara Stadium tomorrow.
