The International Sambo Federation (FIAS) have approved rules on athletes hoping to switch nationalities.

It comes after the issue was discussed at a FIAS Executive Committee meeting in Russian capital Moscow.

A two-year "quarantine" period will apply for athletes where there is no agreement between the respective governing bodies in the countries involved.

If an agreement is reached, however, then the athlete will be able to begin competing for their new nation without this two year spell.

"There are three basic items and factors, an athlete's citizenship, a country's representation and an agreement between the national sambo federations," said FIAS Technical Commission chairman Sergei Tabakov, also the FIAS executive director.

"A crucial point here is the so-called quarantine that should last for two years in case an agreement between the Federations involved has not been reached.

"On the contrary, if there are no claims against the transfer, and such an agreement has been reached, then there is no need for the quarantine."

After the discussions, the proposals were unanimously approved by the members of the Executive Committee.
