Colombia got the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) World Championship Qualification Tournament underway by securing victory against host nation Switzerland at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre in Nottwil.

It was a tight contest throughout the four quarters of the Pool A match with both sides keeping within touching distance of each other.

However, although the first quarter ended level at 12 points apiece, Colombia maintained control of the contest from then on and always looked like they had the cutting edge.

Switzerland tried their best to get back into the match at the end of the fourth quarter but Colombia eventually emerged 53-49 winners.

The second and final match of the day saw the other two teams in Pool A, Germany and Poland, come up against each other with the latter coming out on top by a comfortable 68-52 scoreline.

This tournament in Nottwil sees eight teams competing for four spots at the IWRF 2018 World Championship, due to take place in Australian city Sydney between August 5 and 10.

The eight teams have been divided into two groups with pool matches taking place over the next three days before the semi-finals and final on April 7 and 8.

The event is scheduled to continue tomorrow with five more group games.
