Australia and the United States will compete for the gold medal in the women's event at the Water Polo World League Intercontinental Cup in Auckland after securing victories on day five of the competition.

The US secured their spot in the final with a 16-11 victory over neighbours Canada in their semi-final at the Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre.

Australia came out on top against China in a close contest which ended in 8-7.

The other women's results saw Japan thrash the New Zealand second team 24-3 and Kazakhstan edged past the New Zealand first time by an 18-17 scoreline.

In the men’s competition, with it already decided that the US and Australia will battle for the gold tomorrow, Japan and Kazakhstan men’s teams booked their places in the bronze medal match.

Coming into today's matches, both sides knew that victory would be enough to secure their spots in the bronze medal contest.

Japan followed up their victory against hosts New Zealand yesterday by thrashing Saudi Arabia 18-5 and Kazakhstan beat the New Zealand second team 15-7.

Elsewhere in the men's competition, Canada beat Argentina 10-3 and New Zealand’s first team beat China 10-7.

The top four teams in each gender category have now qualified for the World League Super Final.
