Great Britain’s women wheelchair tennis players earned their second 3-0 wins in successive days at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup European Qualification event in Vilamoura in Portugal.

Louise Hunt and Lucy Shuker took to the court to earn the top seeds a clean sweep over Sweden at the Vilamoura Tennis Academy. 

Hunt secured her second 6-0, 6-0 win in as many days as she raced through the opening singles rubber against Alicia Edson.

Shuker, the London 2012 bronze medallist, had a tougher time against Rebecka Sternisa Bellander, but pulled through 6-3, 7-6 to give Great Britain an unassailable lead.

After heavy rain had caused a delayed start to the second day and the event’s Opening Ceremony had also been scheduled before the on-court competition began, Hunt and Shuker completed a dominant doubles performance in fading light, beating Sanna Klindt and Sternisa Bellander 6-1, 6-2.


Tomorrow is a practice day for Great Britain before they are due resume their campaign against Belgium on Saturday (April 14).


Germany saved three match points before succumbing to men’s fourth seed Croatia in a deciding doubles rubber in one of the last two ties to finish on Wednesday’s first day.

Third seed Israel also beat Slovakia in a deciding doubles rubber, Spain and Switzerland both earned 3-0 wins on the opening day of round-robin pool competition.

Russia’s women also began with a 3-0 win.
