World number one Mohamed ElShorbagy booked his place in the semi-finals of the El Gouna International Squash Open after making it 13 wins out of 13 against Germany’s Simon Rösner today.

The home favourite had the better of the fourth game and, after Rösner had recovered from 8-4 down to level, he took the next three points to wrap up an 11-2, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 win on the banks of Egypt's Red Sea in this Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Series event.

"Simon has been in great form this year," ElShorbagy said.

"He’s at his highest world ranking and he won the Tournament of Champions in January, so I knew how tough it was going to be.

"I think we played here two years ago and it was tough as well.

"I just expected it to be tough from the first point and it kept getting tougher and tougher.

"I’m just glad that I pulled away at the end."

Awaiting ElShorbagy in the penultimate round is younger brother Marwan, who beat 2016 world champion and fellow Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad 11-8, 11-7, 11-6.

It will be the 14th time that the ElShorbagy siblings have met on the PSA World Tour.

They went head-to-head at the quarter-final stage of last year’s tournament, when Marwan triumphed in just 24 minutes.

Mohamed, however, has had the better of their more recent meetings, headlined by success in the final of the PSA World Championships in December.

In the women's quarter-finals, a majestic display from world number one Nour El Sherbini saw her thrash France's Camille Serme 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 to underline her status as the favourite for the title.

El Sherbini, who claimed a second World Championship crown at the same venue 12 months ago, had a narrow 8-7 lead on the pair’s head-to-head record and she took just 35 minutes to extend that advantage.

"The match was tough even if it finished 3-0," the Egyptian said.

"I’m used to playing with Camille in the semi-finals."

El Sherbini added: "I’m really glad that I played well.

"I’m pleased with the way I’m playing and I’m happy to be in the semis.

"I think today I just relaxed, didn’t put any pressure on myself, enjoyed my game and I was just having fun."

Standing between El Sherbini and a place in the final is Laura Massaro after the Englishwoman continued her impressive form with an 11-4, 11-8, 11-2 victory over India’s Joshna Chinappa in just 23 minutes.

Comfortable wins over Egypt's Mayar Hany and Hong Kong's Joey Chan in previous rounds had suggested that Massaro was working her way back into form following disappointments at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast and the Windy City Open in Chicago.

There was no let up against Chinappa, who had caused a huge upset against eight-time world champion Nicol David of Malaysia in round two, as she put in a clinical performance.

Massaro has reached the semi-final stage at four of her last six tournaments but she has not made it to a PSA World Tour title match since the 2016-2017 PSA Dubai World Series Finals 10 months ago.

The other quarter-final ties in both the men's and women's events are scheduled to take place tomorrow.
