In the laser standard event, Britain's Nick Thompson had a day to forget as he finished 20th after the opening two races with a points total of 16.

New Zealand's Sam Meech, a bronze medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, came top of the standings on two points with Australia’s Matthew Wearn and Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus close behind on three and four points respectively.

Over in the radial women's competition, defending champion and Olympic gold medallist Marit Bouwmeester of The Netherlands could only finish sixth and was beaten to the top of the fleet by compatriot Maxime Jonker.

Bouwmeester finished on 12 points whilst Jonker finished top of the standings on two.

France’s Marie Barrue and Finland's Tuula Tenkanen completed the top three with points totals of four and seven respectively.

Poland's Marcin Rudawksi was the other defending champion who failed to finish top of his standings.

He, however, will be more pleased with his performance than the other defending champions after finishing fourth in the men’s radial category with 13 points.

Slovenia’s Nik Pletikos cruised to the top of the standings with a points total of seven with Italy’s Federico Tocchi and Yvan Beaufils of host nation France significantly behind with totals of 12 and 13 respectively.

This week’s event, which is seeing 330 sailors from 48 nations take part, is a key test before the Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, in July and August.
