Unseeded Chinese player Cai Yanyan shocked third-seed Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong to reach the final of the women's singles event at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Australian Open at the Quaycentre in Sydney.

The two-time World Junior Championships gold medallist edged past her fancied opponent by a close 21-19 scoreline in the first game before running away with the second by a 21-11 score to secure a 2-0 victory.

Cai will now face Japan's Ayumi Mine, who beat her compatriot and fourth seed Minatsu Mitani 21-17, 21-17.

The men's final will see two Chinese players go head-to-head after Lu Guanzu and Zhou Zeqi emerged triumphant in their respective semi-finals.

Lu put in a sterling performance to recover from a 12-21 first-game defeat against compatriot Zhao Junpeng to win the next two games 21-19, 21-15, recording a 2-1 overall victory.

Zhou had an easier path to the final, beating Hong Kong's seventh seed Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-14, 21-15.

The men's doubles final will also be a match between players from the same nation, but this time it will be Indonesians who will take to the court.

Number one seeds Berry Angriawan and Hardianto beat Indian third seeds Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy 21-17, 21-15 whilst compatriots and number two seeds Wahyu Nayaka and Ade Yusuf secured a 21-17, 21-11 victory against Japanese duo Keiichiro Matsui and Yoshinori Takeuchi.

Over in the women's doubles, South Korean duo Baek Ha-na and Lee Yu-rim caused a shock in their semi-final by knocking out tournament favourites Misato Aratama and Akane Watanabe of Japan by a 21-16, 21-17 scoreline.

They will now face second seeds Ayako Sakuramoto and Yukiko Takahata, who are also from Japan, after they beat South Koreans Chae Yoo-jung and Kim Hye-jong 21-18, 21-16.

In the mixed doubles event, South Koreans Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jung beat compatriots Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Ha-na 21-16, 21-12 to reach the final.

They will now face seventh seed Malaysians Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying, who beat Chinese duo Wang Zekang and Li Yingui 21-16, 25-23.
