Two-time Olympic champion Julien Absalon has announced his retirement from mountain bike competition due to his pollen allergy.

The Frenchman announced his decision to retire from the sport prior to the International Cycling Union (UCI) World Cup race in Albstadt in Germany, which begins tomorrow.

Absalon is one of the most recognised figures in the sport, having won Olympic gold at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

He also claimed five World Championship gold medals and seven World Cup overall titles during a glittering career.

Absalon, also a five-time European champion, claimed he could now focus on different disciplines.

"Next chapter, I decided to stop my cross-country career," Absalon said.

"I'm now focussing on the management of the Absolute-Absalon team and with my ambassador role for my partners.

"And maybe some new challenges on different disciplines."

Speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe, Absalon stated the decision to retire was brought on by his allergies to pollen.

The 37-year-old claimed he did not want to seek a Therapeutic Use Exemption, which would enable him to use medication to manage his allergies in competition.

"I've been suffering from allergies to pollen in the south of France for the past three years, mostly at the start of the season," he said.

"The doctor told me it would only get worse.

"I don't like to take too many medicines."

Reigning Olympic champion Nino Schurter praised Absalon at the end of his career.

"Thank you, Julien Absalon for all you did for the mountain bike sport and the unforgettable battles," he wrote.

"You are a legend.

"Wish you all the best for your next chapter."

The Mountain Bike World Cup season is scheduled to continue in Albstadt.

Competition will take place at the German venue until Sunday (May 20).
