The World Para Athletics Grand Prix series resumed today in Rieti ©World Para Athletics

Britain’s Steve Morris was among the winners on the opening night of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Rieti.

Morris emerged as a clear winner of the men’s T20 1500 metres event in the Italian city as action got underway.

He finished the event in a time of 3min 59.76sec at the Stadio Raul Guidobaldi.

The Briton was followed across the line by Ukraine’s Pavlo Voluikevych and Japan’s Keiya Kobayashi, who ended in 4:05.60 and 4:07.96, respectively.

Ukraine’s Liudmyla Danylina prevailed in the women’s race, as she achieved a time of 4:48.65 clocking.

The Hungarian pairing of Bernadett and Ilona Biacsi completed the top three, after they clocked 4:50.32 and 4:56.67.

There was success for Colombia’s Martiza Arango Buitrago in the women’s T11 1500m event, as she finished in 4:55.83.

Italy’s Asia Girodano, the only other athlete in the race, ended some way back in 6:42.36.

Ireland’s David Leavy topped the standings in the men’s T38 race by producing a time of 4:25.35.

Denmark’s Christopher Vienberg, a T37 class athlete, crossed the line in 4:26.07.

Anders Lagergren followed his compatriot, with the T38 competitor ending in 4:41.85.

A strong women’s T20 400m field produced a closely fought race, with the top three athletes separated by less than one second.

Ukraine’s Yuliia Shuliar celebrated victory in the race, as she finished in a time of 1:00.47.

The podium was completed by Shuliar’s team-mate Natalia Iezlovetska and Japan’s Aimi Toyama, who ended in 1:00.96 and 1:00.98.

Competition is set to continue in Italy tomorrow.
