The Rio 2016 silver medallist impressed from the start and came top of the pile in the fencing event, collecting 264 points thanks to 23 wins.

Her efforts in the swimming were not quite as impressive as she finished fourth in a time of 2min 13.88sec, giving her 283 points.

Her combined performance was also disappointing as she finished 25th on 490 points with a time of 13:30.69

It was, however, enough to make sure she was top of the standings at the end of the first day with a total of 1037 points.

Natalya Coyle of Ireland finished second, seven points whilst Silkina Volha from Belarus rounded off the top three, 11 points behind Coyle on 1,019.

Germany finished top of the women's B qualification after a sterling effort from Annika Schleu, who earned a total of 1,016 points.

Schleu came fifth in fencing with 20 wins to her name and 13th in the swimming event thanks to a time of 2:21.07.

She then came 19th in the combined event with a time of 13:08.10 giving her 512 points.

Great Britain's Kate French was just five points behind Schleu on 1,011 with Alessandra Frezza of Italy finishing on point further back in third on 1,010.

Tomorrow sees men’s qualification take place.
