Britain's Zoe Newson sealed her maiden international triumph as she clinched women's 41 kilograms gold at the World Para Powerlifting European Open Championships in France.

Newson, who won under-45kg bronze at last year's World Championships in Mexico City, finally got her hands on gold after lifting 91kg at the Fiolet Weightlifting Room in Berck-sur-Mer.

Brazil's Lara de Lima took bronze having managed a best effort of 65kg.

The bronze medal in the division went to Kseniia Tokar of the Ukraine after she lifted 55kg.

Tokar also won European silver by virtue of being the second best on the continent.

"It feels weird because I got used to winning bronze and now I have two golds," said Newson.

"I am happy with my performance and did not really expect it.

"I want to have a break now, some time off.

“After that, I will start focusing on the 2019 World Championships and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games."
