Italy's Viviana Bottaro caused one of the upsets of the season as she beat two-time world champion Kiyou Shimizu to win the women's kata gold medal at the Karate 1-Premier League event in Istanbul.

Bottaro continued her run of causing shocks at the competition in the Turkish city as she edged the Japanese star 3-2 in the final at the Asli Çakır Sports Hall.

"I am so, so happy," the victorious Italian said.

"Kiyou Shimizu is a big champion and I have always admired her, so it makes me extremely happy that I could finally defeat her.

"This is the reward for so much effort and so many sacrifices that I have made.

"I would like to dedicate this medal to my family, my boyfriend, and to all the staff of the Italian team that have helped me so much to be here."

Japan bounced back in the men's kata competition as Ryo Kiyuna, also a two-time world champion, claimed an 18th consecutive medal as he beat team-mate Kazumasa Moto 3-2.
