Double world medallist Manrique Larduet of Cuba topped the men’s pommel horse qualification standings on the opening day of the International Gymnastics Federation World Challenge Cup in Guimarães in Portugal.

The 21-year-old, who won all-around silver and horizontal bar bronze at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow, scored a total of 13.800 points at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Guimaraes.

Canada’s Thierry Pellerin finished second with 13.650 points, while France’s Axel Augis came third with 13.450.

In the men’s floor exercise, the best performer was reigning Pan American champion Jorge Vega Lopez of Guatemala with 14.300 points.

He was followed by Japan’s Takumi Sato with 14.200 points and Lithuania’s Tomas Kuzmickas with 13.950.

Romania's Andrei Vasile Muntean, the 2010 Youth Olympic Games gold medallist, came out on top in the men’s rings with 14.500 points, beating nearest challenger Yuri van Gelder of The Netherlands by a margin of 0.150 and third-placed Kentaro Yunoki of Japan by a further 0.50.

Qualification was also held today in the women’s vault and uneven bars.

South Korea’s Yeo Seojeong outshone her opponents in the vault with 13.700 points.

Great Britain’s Emily Thomas finished second with 13.400 points, while Croatia’s Tijana Tkalcec came third with 13.325.

In the uneven bars, Canada’s Isabela Onyshko, a team gold medallist at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, prevailed with 13.650 points.

Second place went to home favourite Filipa Martins with 13.400 points, while Mexico’s Ahtziri Sandoval completed the top three with 13.200.

Action in Guimarães is due to continue tomorrow.
